Chapter Twenty-Nine

Nadia

“Miss Nadia, can we put more cheese in this?”

I smile at Jasmine. “That is an excellent question. Can anyone guess what I’m going to say?”

Katie’s hand shoots up higher than the rest.

“Anyone under 20?”

She lowers it with a pout.

“You’re going to say that we all get to put our own special flavor in it,” Nathan pipes up.

“That is exactly right! So if you want more cheese Jasmine, I say go for it.”

“I love cheese,” Jasmine says, her eyes getting wide.

I chuckle. “You and me both, kid.”

Katie and Jasmine give each other a high five. So nice to see my kids getting along. The little timer on my makeshift ‘desk’ beeps and the kids groan.

“That’s it, everybody! As you know, whatever you make today is yours to keep; just grab a to-go box.” My favorite little cacophony begins again as they all pack up and get ready to leave.

I gotta hand it to them, everyone is really improving. Even Katie. I feel a surge of pride swell up in my chest. Jasper be damned. I’m proud of them, I’m proud of me.

I wonder...if Kevin knew the truth...would he support me? This? After my awkward kiss and run, he’s been on my mind even more than usual. If that’s even possible.

That moment where he looked at me, his face shining with earnest care and concern... I wanted to tell him the truth so bad, it felt like it might just escape from my face before I could stop it.

Now, I keep picturing how I’d tell him. My shower tiles have heard a lot of different renditions, but every time, I get too scared to imagine what he’d actually say back...about my cooking, my teaching.

I’ll bet he’s amazing in the kitchen. He’s probably great with kids too, the handsome bastard. I know he’d love Nathan, and definitely Jasmine. I can see him nudging them, trying to start silly trouble in class.

The pleasant dream bursts when I remember something pretty fucking crucial. I have no idea what he’d say. All the daydreaming is great but...is it worth the risk?

“Earth to Miss Q?”

I blink then stare back at Katie. “Hi...sorry.”

“I asked if you were gonna be alright heading home?”

“Yeah, yeah, I’m fine. I’m a big girl.”

“No, I know but—”

“Katie, go. You’re gonna be late for work.”

“Alright...” she grumbles. “Just text me or something—”

“Gooooo.”

She gives me a playful salute and scrambles out of the building with the rest of the kids. I take my time getting all of their leftover supplies gathered and chucking them into my bags.

With my arms full, I lock up and head out of the building, only to freeze the second I step off the stairs. Jasper. Will this fucker never learn? He doesn’t give me a chance to run.

“There’s my girl.”

“Don’t,” I warn, but my heart is hammering. This time it’s different. I can smell the liquor on his breath.

When he gets like this, there’s no telling what he’ll do. I had to learn that the hard way years ago. I do a quick scan of the street.
